Lunda South is a province of Angola located in the northeast of the country. It has an area of 77,636 km ² and its capital is Saurimo.

Lunda South is located in the plateau zone, characterized by reliefs not exceeding 1.000m.

Saurimo was the ancient capital of the province of Lunda, but with the its division into two provinces (Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte), remained as the capital of Lunda South in 1978.

Luanda is about 1.040 km away and Lucapa  about 135 km away from Saurimo.

It has 4 municipalities:

  •     Kakolo
  •     Mukonda
  •     Saurimo


The climate of the province is predominantly tropical, with temperatures ranging between 34ºC and 22ºC.


Consisting mostly by ethnic Lunda-Tchokwe, besides other ethnolinguistic groups such as Bangalas, Xinge, Minungos, Luvales, and M'bundas Balubas, the latter are a fusion, from the regions of Moxico and Lunda North.

The national language most spoken in the province is Tchokwe.

The people Lunda-Tchokwe, mostly from Lunda South, has a rich historical and cultural tradition, taking into account the value of their folk songs and traditional dances such as: Macoopo, Txianda, Txissela, Txiliapanga, Miting, Muquixi, etc.
These people also inherited a fabulous ethnographic  wealth and its sculptural school is one of the most remarkable in all of Africa.

In culture, there are several dance groups, recreation centers, musical groups and drama groups. Just as monuments of civil and religious architecture, and historical sites.

In this province is practiced subsistence farming and the main crops are cassava, maize, rice, peanut, sweet potato and yam. The production of pineapple is one of the most important agricultural production.

Also fishing is practiced.

It is in the diamond mining that the province finds its main economic activity. Manganese and iron are other mineral resources exploited.

The sculptures are well known, especially the masks made of wood.  Pieces of basketry and pottery are also produced.


Typical dishes are Kizaca, funge and dry meat. Dishes with leaves (cassava, beans and other)are greatly appreciated.

There is an airport in Saurimo for large and small airplanes.

You can reach the province by road. Leaving Luanda, you’ll arrive in Saurimo through Malange.


The forests are dense and green, watchi. Here, there are savanna shrubs, wooded savannas and dry forests.

The province has several species of animals: elephants, bushbuck, nunces, roan, hippos, lions, alligators, crocodiles, jaguars, goats, cats brave, and snakes such as pythons, flying snake, bushmaster, cusdeira, among others.

Regarding birds, you can see vultures, swallows, eagles, storks, herons, fish bites, chicken of the woods, partridges, ducks, among others.

The most important rivers of the province are the Mombo, the Luachi, Chicapa, Luachimo, Chiumbe and Kasai, which rises in the region of Alto Chicapa, at a height of 1.300m.

The other rivers are the Muanguês,Cuango, Luó, Luavuri, Cucumbi and Luzia.

In all these rivers one can practice sport fishing.

  • Luari Pond, located 8km east of Saurimo, has navigable water and is rich in fishery resources

  • Elengue tourist area which lies 10 kilometers from Saurimo, towards Catoca
  • Tunnel of Luachimo River

  • Religious Monument of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, built in 1930.
  • Religious Monument Catholic Mission, built in 1948, is located in Saurimo next to the Bishopric.
  • Monuments of Civil Architecture: Residence of former officials of the Public Administration, Governor's Residence, CTT Building, and the former Government House.

The annual festivities take place on 28 March.
